How spring weeks and insight programmes work in 2027

Spring weeks (also called "insight programmes" or "spring vacation schemes" in law) are intensive 3-7 day or 2-4 week programmes designed to give university students insight into a career in a specific sector. They run during university holiday periods: primarily Easter holidays (March-April 2027), Christmas holidays (December 2026-January 2027), and occasionally summer (July-August 2026). Applications open 4-6 weeks before the programme runs. Finance spring weeks typically run in March-April and open in December 2026-January 2027. Consulting and law spring weeks typically run in April-May and open in February-March 2027.

Spring weeks serve a dual purpose: they provide genuine insight into the industry, and they function as a recruitment vehicle. Most firms explicitly state that spring week participants have a faster-track route to summer internships and graduate roles. Conversion rates are exceptionally high: 40-60% of consulting spring week participants receive summer analyst offers; 30-50% of law spring week participants receive training contract offers; 20-30% of Big 4 spring week participants convert to summer internship/graduate offers. For this reason, spring weeks are strategic entry points for candidates.

The application process for spring weeks is typically simpler than for summer internships. Most programmes follow a three-stage process: application form (CV, cover letter, motivation), online assessment (situational judgement test or psychometric test), and interview (competency-based or motivational). The timeline is faster: from application to final decision is typically 3-4 weeks. Spring week programmes move faster because they run on a tighter calendar.

Spring weeks are the strategic entry point for candidates who haven't yet secured summer internships. A successful spring week gives you experience, firm knowledge, and often a referral advantage when applying for summer programmes in the same firm. Many firms explicitly fast-track spring week participants to summer applications. Additionally, spring weeks are less competitive than summer internships because fewer candidates apply (university scheduling constraints mean not all students can attend). A spring week offer is therefore a valuable stepping stone to a summer internship or training contract.

Key dates to know

Finance spring weeks

Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan open in September 2026.

Deadlines: November 2026.

These are competitive but easier entry than summer analyst (applications are on rolling basis but less volume).

Consulting spring weeks

BCG opens September 2026; McKinsey, Bain October 2026.

Deadlines span November 2026-January 2027.

Spring weeks are easier than summer analyst. 40-60% of spring week participants convert to summer analyst offers.

Law spring vacation schemes

Magic Circle (Slaughter and May, Freshfields, Clifford Chance, Linklaters) open October 2026.

Deadlines: November 2026-January 2027.

These are high-value in terms of conversion and credibility for full training contract.

Big 4 spring programmes

All Big 4 open spring programmes September 2026.

Deadlines extend through December 2026-January 2027.

Spring programmes are 3-4 weeks with 20-30% conversion to summer/graduate roles.

Why early applications matter

1

Apply to spring weeks early. Finance spring weeks open in September and have relatively low volume. Applying within 2 weeks of opening increases your odds.

2

Use spring weeks as practice for summer applications. A spring week interview teaches you what each firm values, helps you refine your pitch, and gives you genuine insight for summer applications.

3

Complete a spring week before applying to summer programmes in the same sector. Spring week experience makes your summer application significantly stronger. Interviewers will ask about your experience and you can speak authentically.

4

Spring weeks are lower stakes than summer programmes. You're less nervous, less prepared (usually), but also less likely to receive an offer. Use them to build confidence and interview skills.

5

Apply to spring weeks across sectors. Finance spring week in January teaches you different things than consulting spring week in March. Diversity of experience makes you a stronger candidate.

What to have ready before spring week applications open

CV

Your standard CV. Spring weeks use the same CV as summer applications, though they're less competitive about experience breadth.

Motivation statement

Have a 3-4 minute answer ready for "Why this career?" (finance/law/consulting) and "Why this firm?" Spring week applications ask these explicitly.

Awareness of the industry

For finance: know 2-3 recent deals. For consulting: understand what case interviews are. For law: know the difference between transactional and dispute work. For Big 4: understand audit vs tax vs consulting.

Psychometric test familiarisation

Some firms include aptitude tests in spring week applications. Familiarity with format reduces anxiety. If applying to finance/Big 4, do a few practice tests.

Interview preparation

Spring week interviews are competency-focused, not technical (unlike summer interviews for finance/consulting). Prepare STAR examples covering motivation, teamwork, and achievement.

Flexibility on dates

Spring weeks run during specific holiday periods. Confirm your university schedule aligns with programme dates before applying.

Common application mistakes

Applying to spring weeks as "fallback" from summer applications. This is strategic error. Spring weeks are stepping stones. A spring week participant has better odds of a summer offer than a non-participant with equivalent grades.

Missing the application deadline. Finance spring weeks (March-April 2027) open in December 2026-January 2027. These dates come fast after university applications close. Set calendar reminders in November.

Using the same generic answers for all firms. "I'm interested in finance/law/consulting" is forgettable. Spring week applications explicitly ask "Why this firm?" — tailor your answer to each.

Not preparing an industry-specific motivation. Spring week interviews assume you've thought about why this career. Vague answers suggest you're exploring without genuine interest.

Applying only to one spring week programme. Unlike summer applications, spring weeks have lower conversion to offers (because conversion to future programmes is the goal, not offers themselves). Apply to 2-3 programmes to increase odds of at least one offer.

Underestimating competency-based questions. Spring week interviewers ask about teamwork, motivation, and achievement more heavily than summer interviewers ask about technical knowledge. Practice STAR examples thoroughly.
