Section 1

What a consulting spring programme is

A consulting spring programme (sometimes called a spring insight, discovery programme, or early careers programme) is a 1–5 day paid placement at a consulting firm aimed at first year undergraduates. It gives you an introduction to consulting, the firm's culture, and the problem-solving approach that defines the industry.

During the programme you will typically attend presentations, work on a mini case study with other participants, shadow consultants, and network with associates and partners. At McKinsey, BCG and Bain, these programmes are highly structured and competitive — they are the primary pipeline for identifying future summer intern candidates.

The real value of a consulting spring programme is the fast-track it creates. At most top firms, strong spring programme participants are given priority access to summer internship applications — sometimes skipping early screening stages entirely. Some firms make direct summer offers to exceptional spring participants.

Competition varies by firm. McKinsey and BCG spring programmes are extremely competitive (acceptance rates of 2–5%). Firms like Deloitte, Accenture and PA Consulting run larger programmes with acceptance rates of 10–15%.

How to apply for a consulting spring programme

Your CV

Consulting firms look for academic excellence, leadership, and structured thinking:

Academic record: top consulting firms screen heavily on grades. A strong predicted grade (first or high 2:1) and excellent A-Levels are important at MBB.

Leadership evidence: society president, sports captain, event organiser, any role where you drove outcomes through others.

Structured thinking: maths, economics, engineering, or science backgrounds signal analytical ability. If your degree is in humanities, compensate with quantitative extracurriculars.

Concise, clean formatting. One page. Every bullet point should demonstrate impact.

Cover letter

Consulting cover letters should demonstrate three things:

1

Why consulting? Show you understand the problem-solving, client-facing nature of the work. Reference specific types of projects that interest you.

2

Why this firm? Differentiate between MBB firms (their approaches genuinely differ). Reference specific practice areas, industries, or values.

3

Why you? Evidence of leadership, analytical capability, and the ability to work in teams under pressure.

Application questions

Common consulting application questions:

Problem solving: "Tell us about a time you solved a complex problem." — The answer should show structured, logical thinking.

Leadership: "Describe a time you influenced others to achieve a shared goal." — Consulting is fundamentally about influencing clients without formal authority.

Curiosity: "What business issue are you most interested in right now?" — Show commercial awareness and genuine intellectual curiosity.

The online tests — McKinsey Solve, BCG case tests and more

Consulting online assessments are different from banking ones. They test problem-solving ability rather than speed on standard psychometric questions.

McKinsey Solve (Imbellus)

60–70 minutes

Providers: McKinsey proprietary

A game-based ecosystem simulation that tests your ability to make data-driven decisions. You manage a virtual ecosystem by analysing species data, food chains, and environmental factors. There is no way to "study" for this — but doing it once removes the novelty.

BCG Online Case

45–60 minutes

Providers: BCG proprietary

A digital case study where you analyse data, build charts, and answer strategic questions. Tests the same skills as a live case interview but in a written format.

SHL / numerical + verbal

20–40 minutes

Providers: SHL

Used by Big 4 and non-MBB consulting firms. Standard numerical and verbal reasoning format.

Preparation tips

1

For McKinsey Solve: the game is easier when you approach it systematically. Take time to understand the data before making decisions.

2

For BCG Online Case: practise case interview frameworks. The online version tests the same analytical skills.

3

If applying to Big 4 firms, practise standard SHL numerical and verbal tests.

Section 7

The case interview — the defining feature of consulting recruitment

The case interview is what makes consulting recruitment fundamentally different from banking or law. In a case interview, you are given a business problem — "Our client's profits have declined by 20%. What should they do?" — and asked to solve it live, out loud, with the interviewer.

This is not a test of business knowledge. It is a test of structured thinking, communication, and composure. You are expected to break the problem into components, ask clarifying questions, analyse data when provided, and arrive at a recommendation — all while thinking out loud.

At MBB firms, you will face 2–4 case interviews during the recruitment process. Each lasts 30–40 minutes. The interviewer is assessing your problem-structuring ability, your analytical rigour, your communication clarity, and your ability to synthesise findings into a clear recommendation.

Common question types

Profitability

"Our client, a UK retailer, has seen profits decline by 15% over the past two years. Why, and what should they do?" — Start by separating revenue and cost. Then dig into each.

Market entry

"Should our client, a European bank, enter the Indian market?" — Structure around market attractiveness, competitive landscape, client capability, and potential entry modes.

Market sizing

"How many coffee cups are sold in London per day?" — Break it into components: population, working population, coffee drinkers, cups per person per day. Show your working.

Fit / PEI

Personal Experience Interview (at McKinsey): "Tell me about a time you led a team through a difficult situation." — The structure is similar to banking competency questions but with deeper probing.

How firms score your answers

Problem structuring — Can you break a complex problem into logical components?

Analytical rigour — Can you work with data, make calculations, and draw accurate conclusions?

Communication — Can you think out loud clearly? Do you explain your reasoning as you go?

Creativity — Can you generate hypotheses and consider non-obvious angles?

Synthesis — Can you pull your findings together into a clear recommendation?

Practice a HireVue question

While case interviews are the main assessment, many consulting firms also use video interviews for initial screening. Practising on camera builds the communication and structuring skills that transfer directly to live case interviews.

Section 9

What happens during the spring programme

Consulting spring programmes are shorter than banking spring weeks but packed with content:

1

Case workshop

2–3 hours

A structured workshop teaching you how to approach business problems. You will work through a case study as a group, guided by a consultant. This is both educational and evaluative.

2

Team presentation

2–4 hours

Work with other participants on a business challenge and present your recommendations. Assessors evaluate your analytical contribution, team skills, and presentation quality.

3

Networking

Throughout

Informal sessions with associates, engagement managers, and partners. Ask about their project experience, the firm's culture, and what they look for in candidates.

How to stand out during the week

Prepare basic case interview frameworks before the programme. Even a surface-level understanding of profitability trees and market sizing approaches will help during workshops.

Ask thoughtful questions that show commercial curiosity. "What is the most interesting project you have worked on recently?" opens good conversations.

Be collaborative during group exercises. Consulting is a team sport — the best candidates build on others' ideas rather than pushing their own.

Section 10

Spring programme deadlines by firm
