How consulting applications work in 2027

Consulting firm recruitment in the UK operates on a distinct timeline, separate from investment banking. Most consulting firms open applications for summer analyst internships in August-September 2026 for programmes starting June 2027. Spring week programmes (3-4 day intensive programmes in March-April 2027) open slightly later in September-October 2026. This gives a longer application window than banking.

The application process typically follows four stages: online application form (including CV, cover letter, and sometimes situational judgement test), case interview (2-3 cases conducted by phone or video), final round (usually 1-2 more cases with senior consultants or partners), and offer. The entire process from application to offer takes 8-12 weeks. Some firms (particularly McKinsey) include a Problem Solving Game (PSG) or similar online assessment before the case interview stage.

Case interview practice is essential. Unlike banking interviews which are competency-focused, consulting interviews centre entirely on structured problem solving. Most candidates need 20+ hours of case practice to perform well. Cases follow predictable frameworks (profitability, market sizing, go-to-market, etc). Candidates who practise 15-20 cases beforehand typically perform significantly better than those who wing it.

Spring weeks are the strategic entry point. Many consulting firms (particularly McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Deloitte) explicitly state that spring week participants have a faster-track route to summer offers. Acceptance rates for spring weeks are 8-12% (still competitive, but higher than summer direct at 2-3%). 40-60% of spring week participants receive summer analyst offers. This makes spring weeks a lower-risk entry point.

Key dates to know

MBB application window

McKinsey, BCG, Bain applications typically open September-October 2026.

Deadlines span through December 2026-January 2027.

Apply within 4-6 weeks of opening for best odds (rolling admissions informally favour early applicants).

Big 3 (Deloitte, EY, KPMG) window

These firms open earlier: July-August 2026.

Deadlines are later: November 2026-January 2027.

Less competitive than MBB but higher volume of applications.

Spring weeks

Spring week applications open September-October 2026.

Deadlines are typically November-December 2026.

Easier entry point: 40-60% of spring week participants convert to summer offers.

Why early applications matter

1

Apply to spring weeks first. They're easier entry points and have less competition. Many firms offer fast-track conversion to summer analyst roles.

2

Submit your application within 4 weeks of it opening for MBB firms. While they don't officially use rolling admissions, early applicants have better odds.

3

Prepare your case interview answers before applications open. Consulting firms send case interview invitations within 48-72 hours. Being ready immediately matters.

4

Apply to firms in this order: Spring week → Deloitte/EY/KPMG → Oliver Wyman/PA → MBB. This builds your case interview skills progressively.

5

Follow each consulting firm's news releases. McKinsey and BCG announce application opening dates on their careers pages 1-2 weeks in advance. Set a calendar reminder.

What to have ready before consulting applications open

Tailored CV

Consulting CV format differs from banking. Use a chronological format with 2-3 bullet points per experience highlighting impact and scale. Get it reviewed by someone experienced in consulting recruitment.

Case interview practice

Complete at least 10 practice cases before your first real case interview. Most candidates see major improvement between case 3 and case 10. Use platforms like Intervyo, CaseCoach, or PrepLounge.

Cover letter / Why consulting?

Have a 3-4 sentence answer ready for "Why consulting?" and "Why this firm?" Consulting firms ask these questions in applications, interviews, and assessment centres.

Commercial awareness

Follow consulting industry news. Know 2-3 recent engagements each firm has worked on, understand their practice areas (Strategy, Operations, Digital, etc), and know their key differentiators.

Interview frameworks

Memorise the main case frameworks: Profitability, Market Sizing, Go-to-Market, Expansion, Pricing, M&A. Practise applying these to different industries (tech, retail, healthcare, etc).

PSG/Online assessment prep

McKinsey and some others use online assessments (Problem Solving Game). These are logic and time-management heavy. Practice a few if targeting McKinsey specifically.

Common application mistakes

Not practising cases before applying. This is the biggest mistake. Candidates who practise 10+ cases interview significantly better than those who don't. Case interviews cannot be passed on pure logic — they require formula and practice.

Treating spring weeks as backup to summer direct. Spring weeks are the better path. Lower acceptance rates but much higher conversion to offers (40-60%). Many consultants recommend spring weeks as the entry point.

Waiting until the deadline to apply. Early applications (within 2-3 weeks of opening) signal genuine interest and give you more scheduling flexibility for interviews.

Using the same cover letter for all firms. Consulting firms ask "Why this firm?" and they want to see genuine interest. Tailor your answer to their practice areas, values, and recent work.

Ignoring smaller consulting firms to focus only on MBB. Big 3 (Deloitte, EY, KPMG), Oliver Wyman, and PA Consulting offer excellent careers and lower entry barriers. A broader application strategy increases your overall odds.

Not following up on test stage invitations promptly. When a firm invites you to a case interview or online assessment, respond within 24 hours and schedule immediately. Delays suggest low interest.
